Student-employee unionization has become an increasingly common pathway for teaching and research assistants to advocate for their interests through workplace democracy. Unions allow student workers to bargain over compensation, access grievance procedures with independent legal counsel for sexual or workplace harassment, and improve diversity in academia through progressive measures such as affordable child care or dependent care. There are 38 certified grad employee unions across the country represented by a number of international unions and dozens more active unionization campaigns. The UAW International Union represents 40k of nearly 100k unionized student-workers, including the California system, the UMass system, Columbia, and NYU. By joining together within this larger movement, we can have a voice in making higher education more democratic. #chartmonth
